LAS VEGAS (April 3, 2011) – Ron Capps ran similar elapsed times and speeds during both his runs during today's eliminations in his NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but one was a win and the other was a loss.
Capps defeated Tim Wilkerson in round one of the 12th annual SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals, with a 4.211-second/295.08-mile-per-hour run. In round two against Cruz Pedregon, he had a similar 4.219/289.82 run, but it was not enough to defeat Pedregon, who responded with the quickest and fastest lap of the session, 4.155/307.37.
"We ran up against a guy who had a top-three car today, and we came up just short," said the Southern California native. "Despite the hot-track conditions Friday and yesterday, then very different conditions today, we were very consistent, and everyone is encouraged with the performance of the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car.
"We will test tomorrow along with the other Don Schumacher Racing cars, and hope to pick up a couple of more ticks on the clock before Charlotte two weeks from now.
The DSR driver heads East for the VisitMyrtleBeach.com NHRA Nationals April 15-17 at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte, N.C., holding seventh place in the NHRA Full Throttle Funny Car championship race.
Capps had earned the 10th starting spot for today's eliminations on the strength of his final-qualifying run on Saturday (4.223/297.35).
Capps first-round success means he needs two-round wins for an even 400 during a career which began in 1995, a mark 15 other professional drivers have achieved in NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series events. In that time, he has a won-loss record of 398-299, including 31 overall wins.
